Half Shekel Coin Replica – Gamla (66–70 CE)
This is a replica of a silver half shekel coin discovered in the ancient city of Gamla, dating to the Great Revolt of Judea against Rome (66–70 CE). One side bears the Hebrew words “Half Shekel,” and the other “Holy Jerusalem.”
During the time of the Second Temple, every Jew contributed a half shekel annually for its upkeep, as commanded in the Bible. The original coin from Gamla was locally cast, likely using recycled materials, giving it a crude and distinctive appearance.
Gamla, founded in the 3rd century BCE, served as a major Jewish stronghold until its destruction by the Romans in 67 CE.
